⚠️ Does AI take YOUR Data 🤔
ISSUE 006
Welcome to the 6th edition of Curious Hours
Over the course of six editions of Curious Hours, we have consistently explored the transformative impact of AI on various business sectors. However, a critical question has always lingered in our minds:
Can we trust AI to protect our data?
As we integrate AI into our daily operations, it is imperative to ensure that our information remains secure and isn't exploited for someone else's benefit. In this edition, we are looking deep into this crucial topic to provide clarity and insights.
We did the research so you don’t have to!
Setting the Rules with Jenni.ai:
Imagine AI as a new player in a game. The article from Jenni.ai is like a guidebook that helps us understand the rules of this game. It talks about a big plan in Europe to make sure AI plays fair and respects our privacy. It’s like having a referee in a sport, making sure everyone plays by the rules. This helps us feel safe, knowing that there are strict guidelines to protect our personal information when we talk to AI, like Chat GPT.
Keeping Our Conversations Private with Panda Security:
Panda Security gives us easy tips on how to keep our chats with ChatGPT private. It’s like teaching us how to lock our diary so no one else can read it. They show us how to erase our chat history and change settings to make sure we have control over our own words.
ChatGPT’s Secret Diary Mode with Silicon Republic:
The team at Silicon Republic introduce us to a special ‘secret diary’ mode in ChatGPT. When we use this mode, it’s like writing in a diary that forgets everything once we close it. Our words are not stored anywhere, keeping our secrets safe.
Scribbr is like a friend who gives us advice on how to stay safe while chatting with ChatGPT. They remind us to only download the app from safe places and to keep it updated, just like how we lock our doors at night to stay safe.
Learning from the Experts with SSRN:
Finally, the research paper from SSRN is like a deep dive into the world of AI, written by experts. They talk about the challenges of keeping our information safe and share ideas on how to make it better. It’s like having a guide to help us navigate the complex world of AI, ensuring we understand the risks and how to protect ourselves.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
AI is one of the most important things humanity is working on. It is more profound than, I dunno, electricity or fire. We have learned to harness fire for the benefits of humanity, but we had to overcome its downsides, too. So my point is, AI is really important, but we have to be concerned about it.
What you NEED to know about the
AI Safety Summit in London
The AI Safety Summit is like a big neighbourhood meeting where representatives from different countries, top AI companies, and experts are coming together. They are meeting in a historic place in the UK, Bletchley Park, on November 1 and 2, to talk about these new "robotic lawnmowers" (AI technologies). The UK is taking the lead, hosting this global discussion to address the concerns and opportunities AI brings to the table.
The aim is to understand the risks tied to AI, especially as it gets more advanced, and come up with a joint plan to ensure it's used safely and ethically. They will discuss how to prevent potential mishaps, like our hypothetical lawnmower chopping off the neighbour's roses, but on a much larger and more serious scale, like ensuring AI respects people's privacy and doesn't inadvertently cause harm.
The conversation is significant because, just like our neighbourhood would want to prevent any lawnmower accidents, the global community wants to prevent any mishaps with AI. Plus, it’s a step towards creating rules or laws that ensure AI technologies respect our privacy and are used responsibly. With many countries and big tech companies joining in, it's a chance to set some ground rules and make sure us all while keeping us safe.
Various governments are stepping up to regulate AI tools for better data protection. For instance, Italy's data protection authority plans to review AI platforms and hire experts to ensure data privacy and security. 2
Over 80% of enterprises are expected to have used Generative AI, which includes solutions and techniques for AI data protection, by 2023. This underscores the growing reliance on AI for safeguarding data against potential threats. 3
What we think the regulations should be
Operational Measures:
Promote the implementation of robust monitoring and security evaluations for AI models to identify and mitigate potential threats early.
Encourage adversarial training during model construction to bolster the AI models' ability to defend against potential manipulations.
Privacy By Design:
Advocate for a 'Privacy by Design' approach in AI development, ensuring privacy considerations are integrated throughout the system's lifecycle.
This includes collecting and retaining only necessary personal data, implementing techniques to protect individuals' identities within the data, and conducting proactive privacy audits.
Educational Measures:
Foster a culture of awareness around AI usage within organizations and the wider community, emphasizing the importance of vigilance regarding potential risks.
Regular training programs for employees on privacy best practices and data protection should be encouraged to build a strong first line of defence against privacy infringements.

Wrapping things up…
As we wrap up the 6th edition of Curious Hours, the emphasis on data protection while utilising AI has resonated profoundly with us. Diving into this subject has unfurled the critical importance of safeguarding personal and sensitive information in the realm of artificial intelligence.
